Towards an Achievable Performance for the Loop Nests

Numerous code optimization techniques, including loop nest optimizations, have been developed over the last four decades. Loop optimization techniques transform loop nests to improve the performance of the code on a target architecture, including exposing parallelism. Finding and evaluating an optimal, semantic-preserving sequence of transformations is a complex problem. The sequence is guided using heuristics and/or analytical models and there is no way of knowing how close it gets to optimal performance or if there is any headroom for improvement. This paper makes two contributions. First, it uses a comparative analysis of loop optimizations/transformations across multiple compilers to determine how much headroom may exist for each compiler. And second, it presents an approach to characterize the loop nests based on their hardware performance counter values and a Machine Learning approach that predicts which compiler will generate the fastest code for a loop nest. The prediction is made for both auto-vectorized, serial compilation and for auto-parallelization. The results show that the headroom for state-of-the-art compilers ranges from 1.10x to 1.42x for the serial code and from 1.30x to 1.71x for the auto-parallelized code. These results are based on the Machine Learning predictions.Comment: Accepted at the 31st International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing (LCPC 2018

Abstract: After selection, 40 cases of ependymomas and anaplastic ependymomas were submitted to cariometry with simple micrometric occular, using histologic slides stained with HE and PAP-GFAP methods. In comparision to 10 cases of normal ependyma, the increase in nuclear volumen was correlated with the variation of the cell population and the positivity of the immunohistochemical stain with the histological degree of malignancy of the ependymomas. In ependyma the cell count per high power field is low (+/- 25 c/hpf), the mean nuclear volumen is low (70 (im3), and the majority of the ependymal cells are GFAP negative (75%). In ependymomas the cellularity and mean nuclear volumen are greater (+ /- 50 c/hpf and 140 |im3) with a change in the immunohistochemical pattern being the GFAP positive cells the majority (70%). In anaplastic ependymomas the cellularity and mean nuclear volumen are even greater (85 c/hpf e 200 mm3) and occurs an approximate return to the immunohistochemical pattern of normal ependyma, being the majority of its cells GFAP negative (70%)

Abstract: Using cariometry, with simple micrometric ocular, measure was taken of 1,500 nuclei for comparison of the nuclear volumes between normal and neoplastic ependymal cells, demonstrating mathematically the difference that occurs with the dedifferentiation of normal into neoplastic cells

Dialogue about medicinal plants: meanings of students

It is a qualitative research with 65 students of two schools in the city of Pelotas/RS, from September 2011 to August 2012. The analyzed data was produced after 18 workshops from essays written by students and focus groups. The meetings allowed us to stimulate in the students values directed to the recognition of the family knowledge and the development of critical thinking about the safe use of medicinal plants, awakening them new visions of the world and providing a reflexion on the care practices. The use of Geertz and Freire referential in the workshops allowed dialogue with the culture of the students and discuss situations of life, becoming in perspective for educational practice nurses

Physical Exercise Decreases Fasting Hyperglycemia in Diabetic Mice Through AMPK Activation

Introduction: The deficiency in glucose uptake in peripheral tissues and increased hepatic gluconeogenesis are physiopathological phenomena observed in type 2 diabetes patients. Physical exercise plays an important role in the improvement of glycemic profile in diabetic patients; however, the mechanisms involved in these processes have not been fully elucidated. Objective: to assess the role of AMPK protein in the glycemic control of diabetic mice after exercise. Methods: During fasting condition, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) and Western blot technique, were combined to assess the glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice (ob/ob and db/db) after a single swimming session. Results: Fasting hyperglycemia, severe insulin resistance and deficiency in the AMPk/ACC signaling in muscle and liver observed in the diabetic mice were reversed after the exercise session. The restoration of AMPK/ACC signaling reduced the expression of the gluconeogenic enzyme, PEPCk in the liver, and increased the translocation of GLUT4 in the skeletal muscle. These data indicate that the activation of AMPK/ACC pathway induced by physical exercise is important to reduce fasting glucose levels in experimental models of type 2 diabetes. These data open new insights for determination of physical activity control on the glucose homeostasis in diabetic patients.15317918
